Welcome Aboard! 2011 Onboarding Survey Results and Commentary

The onboarding process in many companies can be compared to the sitcom “Gilligan’s Island.” The crew and passengers on the S.S. Minnow were expecting a straight forward 3-hour tour, but ended up stranded on a desert island for three years.
Intrepid wanted to uncover barriers to a better onboarding program and took a bearing of common practices over the past three months. We discovered the onboarding process for new employees follows a similar model at many companies and we’ve published our findings in a downloadable ebook featuring beautiful — and occasionally humorous — infographics.
The vast majority of companies believe their new employees solidify a decision to leave within the first six months — sometimes before they have even finished the onboarding process (Lombardi, 2008). If you are in the same boat, you are not alone.
Our fellow travelers’ candor provided us with a treasure trove of revelations. Our findings are charted on pages of this publication — download it for insights into:
- Typical duration, content, and delivery method of onboarding programs
- Types of programs available to employees
- How companies measure success — and where their employees continue to struggle
- Perceived roadblocks to improving the onboarding process
